In most instances, National Wildlife Refuges are going to be less developed and offer fewer amenities than units in the National Park system.
However, they are GREAT options for hiking, birding, wildlife viewing, and habitat observation and appreciation.
Many Refuges DO offer Visitor Centers with exhibits, area information, trail guides, and more.
Often they will have Wildlife Checklists.
Many, although not all, National Wildlife Refuges also offer Junior Ranger Programs with which you can earn a series of badges unique to the NWR System.
Another fun activity within National Wildlife Refuge locations, is collecting stamps in the NWR Blue Goose Passport Program.
Like the National Park stamp books, you can purchase a small book in which you track your NWR visits by stamping the corresponding page with each Refuge’s personalized stamp.
So, pack your camera, your hiking shoes, sunscreen, bug spray, and plenty of water, and get ready to enjoy one of 556 National Wildlife Refuges in the United States!
