As someone that has been visiting the Backwoods Bavaria that is Helen, Georgia for almost my entire life, I can assure you that economic stability has had its extreme ebbs and flows over each generation.
I have such fond memories of all that was Helen back in the mid to late 1990’s. Tubing the Chattahoochee, dinner at the Troll Tavern, a weekend in the Turret Room at the Castle Inn…
Granted, all things you can still do today…
But there were times in between of tornado damage, boarded up businesses, and memories past, with nothing more than a faint breeze of yesteryear listlessly drifting through the alleyways…
But, now, this crazy little thing called Love… Locks, that is… Has joyfully injected the town with a renewed sense of optimism, of romance, and of robust economy.
From celebratory couples marking milestones, to enamored newlyweds, to storied lifelong partners… Even multi-generational families, siblings, and cousins… Everyone is making the trek to Helen, Georgia to express their eternal love for one another!
Strolling the banks of the Chattahoochee, perusing the tangle of eternal love locks, you’ll vicariously experience such a range of emotions. Love, of course, but happiness, celebration, remembrance, and even grief. The vast human experience decorates the rails, with its infinite chapters, written by strangers coming together, simply to share their own piece of the journey.
But, as these friends, families, and lovers make their trip to forever solidify their love for one another amongst the gate-lined Chattahoochee River shoals, they are also grabbing coffees, pretzels, and beer; partaking in the variety of indoor and al fresco Euro-style cuisine; and loading their shopping bags with German and Dutch chocolates, hand-blown glass, local woodworks, gifts, and more!
Now, in Helen, you can even get boba tea and bubble waffles!
I love that love has given Helen yet another lease on life!
