Lava Flow Trail – Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument – Flagstaff, Arizona – 06/02/2010

Sunset Crater Volcano is the youngest Volcano in the San Francisco Volcanic Field in this area of Arizona.

Its last eruption in 1085 left the area covered in several types of lava and black sand.

We hiked the 1 mile Lava Flow Trail around the base of Sunset Crater, and it was FASCINATING to see all the sizes, colors, and textures of the lava formations!

This was our first time visiting an actual volcano, and I honestly never even realized there were any located in the Continental US besides Mount St. Helens in Washington; so this was a very thrilling experience for me, as well as the kids!
