The Arkansas Civil Rights Heritage Trail begins in front of the Old State House in downtown Little Rock, and will eventually extend to the William J. Clinton Presidential Center, as well as other locations throughout the city.
Governor Winthrop Rockefeller is honored for his contributions in the advancement of Civil Rights in the State of Arkansas.
He was the only Southern Governor to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. by holding a memorial in his state. He appointed many people of color to various state commissions and departments; and worked tirelessly for desegregation, and the reform of the criminal justice system.
The Elaine Massacre of 1919 is considered one of the deadliest racial conflicts in the history of the US. As a result, The Elaine Twelve received death sentences for their alleged roles in the events.
