Chancing across the Bonneville Salt Flats and the Bonneville Salt Flats International Speedway was another unexpectedly awesome gem of a find on the slow but lovely ride back East!
Over 30,000 acres of wide open salt fields surround Interstate 80, just East of the Nevada / Utah Border.
Remnants of Pleistocene-Era Lake Bonneville, this is the largest area of salt flats west of the Great Salt Lake. And it definitely looks and feels like you are traversing ancient lands, or even the alien surfaces of distant planets!
The area is open to the public for general frolicking and enjoyment.
There are rest area style stops both Eastbound and Westbound along Interstate 80. Personally, we found the Westbound stop to be more easily accessible.
We saw countless professional photographers and videographers doing their thing, but there is plenty of room for everyone!
The Race Track can be found by taking Exit 4, and then following the signs to travel North, and then East.
There are many events throughout the year where you can catch some of the fastest racing known to man! This IS the place where racers, researchers, developers, scientists, and engineers go to break Land Speed Records! It’s FASCINATING!
A few Google searches, and checking out schedules from groups such as Bonneville Racing or the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association might just cure YOUR need for speed if you are looking to see some of these cars in action!
